I leave the hideout at dawn. Hope is awake and busies herself by the stream. I needn't have worried about her becoming infatuated with me. She acts as if nothing happened between us. It would be a relief to see some sort of signal from one of the other men, but I don't have high hopes. Any signal strong enough to reach me would risk exposing their position to our enemies, especially so soon after enemy contact.

The skies are as clear and empty as the sandy plains. The sandy expanse is easy to surveil. I think Hope and I are safe. For the moment.

Now I can turn my attention to my baser desires: food and Hope. I scan the ground for small mounds that signal a burrow system. I need to clear my head and hunting for heuronds seems like the perfect way to fill some time.

Hunger gnaws at my gut. I've been giving all the food to Hope, but I have to be sneaky about it. She won't eat it unless she thinks there's plenty for me as well. Luckily, heuronds are plentiful, tasty, and easy to catch. Men lived off the small, furry beasts when the mine was first established. We still enjoy them from time to time, but they're a lot of work for not a lot of meat, so our laziness sometimes interferes. Crocotta tastes like paste, but at least we don't have to trap it, skin it, and gut it. There was a time when we worried about over-harvesting the heuronds and driving them to extinction, but the frequency of their reproduction has ensured a constant supply.

I crouch on the sand next to a bolt hole. I've set enough traps in my time to assemble this one blindfolded. The easy repetition of a familiar task is just what I need to quiet my mind.

My desire for Hope terrifies me. Never, in all my years, have I hungered for another like I did last night. I had a few school-age crushes when I was a boy, but they fizzled out quickly and never meant much. As a young soldier, I visited the pleasure women trained in the erotic arts.
